Replacing diesel with frying oil, will it come soon?

At the origin of this proposal, Julian Bayeux, leader of the Europe Party Ecology Greens (EELV). Concretely, the amendment proposes to give the possibility to use the French used oils As fuel substitutes for certain types of cars (Old diesel models).

In other words, reusing the oil from Sunflower Or use rapeseed, filter it and then pour it, so you can finally turn it into fuel. But at the moment, the use of these used oils for this purpose is still prohibited for individuals.

Ten liters of oil for eight liters of fuel

The challenge of the proposed modification by the EELV lies in the authorization given to individuals to use this method. “While diesel fuel exceeds €2 per liter per pump, this solution allows for the immediate elimination of the wallets of French men and women, reducing pollution from diesel engines, and reducing the country’s dependence on energy,” says Julien Bayot. According to the text of the amendment, ten liters of used cooking oil can generate eight liters of fuel.

And if he’s caused a lot of ink to flow in recent weeks, Vice EELV’s proposal isn’t too far fetched. It is also the subject of similar initiatives that have been deployed in recent years. In May 2021, the company air France saw its first aircraft take off with “sustainable aviation fuel”, consisting of 20% cooking oil. Since January 1, 2022, airlines have been required to use at least 1% of this Biofuel.

A few years ago, the French group Avril, located indawn, about creating a fuel consisting of 100% rapeseed oil, intended for the operation of trucks and buses. Smaller structures recover too oils used for this purpose. On the Ile d’Oléron, the Roule ma frite collects approximately 20,000 used cooking oil (mostly from the catering sector) each year. It even managed to get a customs clearance to operate some transportation, notably a truck and a small tourist train from Saint-Trojan-les-Bains, in Charente-Maritime.

This practice is also more developed in Europe. Especially in Belgium, where there are about 20% of Biodiesel Made with frying oils in Europe. Individual use was also allowed for a long time.
