The new PlayStation Plus launches today in Europe: a summary of the available offers

9

On June 23, 2022, Sony in Europe launched the new PlayStation Plus subscription versions for PS4 and PS5 (and a mini PC as well). What services are covered, how to sign up, and at what price? These are the answers to all your questions.

New PlayStation Plus formats now available in Europe

That’s it, the important day has arrived. With Australia and New Zealand, Europe is one of the last major international markets to finally see the launch of the new PlayStation Plus subscription format today, June 23, 2022 – or rather, subordinate New versions of PlayStation Plus because the latter now consists of several levels of service at variable rates. What services and games are included in this new version, how to sign up, and what will change (or not change) for existing subscribers? Let’s sum it all up…

The new PlayStation Plus arose from a merger between the “old” PlayStation Plus subscriptions and PlayStation Now. The latter – a subscription that gives access to a large catalog of games accessible in the cloud, and for some to download on PS4 / 5 – no longer exists as a standalone offering from today. Now, PlayStation Plus subscribers must choose one of the three “tiers” of subscription, providing an increasing amount of associated benefits. The offer is divided as follows:

Playstation plus essential

The basic formula replaces PlayStation Plus as it was until now – with a few differences… which unfortunately are only withdrawals and not add-ons. He understands:

  • Access to online multiplayer games for paid games – Free online games can be played for free for everyone on Sony devices;
  • Cloud saves for all PS4 and PS5 games;
  • Up to two games are accessible per month, drawn from the PS4 and PS5 catalogs, which remain available indefinitely as long as you maintain your active subscription.

This last point is a slight dip from the previous version, which included three games per month (two PS4 games, and one PS5 game). Also of note is the disappearance of new subscribers to the PlayStation Plus lineup, a selection of some of the games that spent great hours on PS4 and that until then had been shown at no extra cost to PS5 owners.

The addon mode retains all the benefits of the base mode, and adds a permanent catalog of nearly 400 PS4 and PS5 games available for download. In this sense, it can be considered specifically as an extension of the PS Plus Collection.

This catalog will evolve over time, and can sometimes accommodate titles from the day they were released. He will be one of his warheads straythe felino-cyberpunk adventure game developed by French BlueTwelve Studio and published by Annapurna Interactive, which will join the show once it launches on July 19.

Be warned: We already know that the big games from the PlayStation Studios lineup will systematically respect a waiting period of at least a few months before joining the formula. In this sense, Sony assumes that it does not intend to align itself with what Xbox Game Pass has to offer on the part of Microsoft. However, let’s rest assured that the catalog is not lacking in gloss: as of today, it includes such big titles as Assassin’s Creed ValhallaAnd the demon souls (PS5), Ghost Cut Out TsushimaAnd the Spider-Man Miles MoralesAnd the backand other things.

To all this, the premium formula adds two new dimensions: old games and cloud games. In addition to the PS4 and PS5 games mentioned above, there are nearly 300 games from the PS1, PSP, PS2, and PS3 catalogs.

It should be noted that the game in cloud games They can be played from PS4 or PS5, or even from a Windows PC – as has been the case until now with PlayStation Now.

What will happen to pre-existing subscribers?

For players who already have a subscription to PS Plus or PS Now, the new PlayStation Plus access will be relatively transparent. The former will simply see their subscription change to PlayStation Plus Essential for the time remaining on their current subscription. For the latter, their subscription will be converted to PlayStation Plus Premium; Thus, these are the ones who achieve the best deal, gaining many advantages that their previous subscription did not give them.

For PlayStation Plus subscribers wishing to switch to a higher version of Essential, they are given the opportunity to do so by paying the price difference between the current version and the new chosen one. Please note, however, that two limitations must be taken into account.

  • Sony uses a very crude calculation method, and very few commercial methods, to determine the transition price: it is based on the price the user “actually” pays for their current subscription, not on the theoretical price of the last subscription. In other words, subscribers who took advantage of a promotion when purchasing their current subscription will pay more than those who paid the full price, thus completely canceling the savings made as a result of this promotion.
  • Only a portion of his remaining subscription can be converted to a new format. For example, if you have 9 months left on your current subscription, you will have no choice but to convert all those 9 months to a higher plan; It’s impossible to choose a PS Plus Premium subscription for only one or three months, it’s time to see if this new offer is right for you.

Emulation, streaming… technically, does it hold up?

Since we’re irreparably tech-obsessed, we obviously won’t get into these aspects of the new PlayStation Plus. Two topics in particular deserve our attention: the quality of PS1 and PSP games emulation on PS4/5 (PS2 games are not emulated, played in PS4 diversions), and the quality of service provided for game streaming.

The first point already caused a lot of talk among gamers and the international press, who complained in particular that, at the launch of the service in Asia, some PS1 games were shown in PAL 50Hz versions, with many adverse consequences for the console experience. However, we cannot draw immediate conclusions about the sauce with which European players will be eaten: it all depends on how Sony decided to manage distribution in our regions.

Shooter and stealth game siphon filter is one of the leaders in the PS1 catalog of premium format.

About the part cloud gamesIt’s a matter of knowing how Sony’s offering stands compared to current standards. If the Japanese manufacturer was one of the first major video game players to launch its cloud service (that was in 2014!), the landscape around it has changed a lot. Google Stadia, Xbox Cloud, Nvidia GeForce Now… The cloud games It is now all around us, and some of the services have managed to amaze us with technical services that go beyond the unbelievable. Was Sony able to stay updated, both in terms of picture and sound quality, latency, or even connection stability? This is the perfect opportunity to examine this – bearing in mind that the results observed here will not be identical to what happens elsewhere, given that the quality of Sony’s network infrastructure is not necessarily the same in all regions.

Obviously a few days will be necessary for us to test all this with the rigor that it should. We’re going to start our tests today, so we’ll schedule a date for you very soon, in the columns of our comrades from gamekult like these Digitalfor our detailed review.
