Art: Introduction to the purchase of his first work, Hicham Daoudi

Hicham Daoudi
Gallery owner and founder of Marrakech Mines Exhibition

There are memories that have a smell, a sound, a sound. My first auction is etched in my memory. I remember the hammer blows of the auctioneer who beat the “Sold, Sold!” , accompanied by a superior voice. I remember this distinct atmosphere and tangible adrenaline in the room of this great Moroccan palace. With each piece presented, every buyer in the room had the impression that they had struck the deal of the century. Then I wondered, but how one should make the right acquisition. Displaying a work of art at home is a cherished dream for many. Contrary to what many people might think, this aspiration is not far-fetched. You don’t have to be very wealthy to collect art. Hicham Daoudi, gallery owner and founder of the Comptoir des Mines de Marrakech, gives us some valuable advice.

When we want to buy a work of art, should we let our hearts speak and buy what makes us happy?
It all depends on the desire to own works of art, is it primarily for one’s home, to decorate or arrange one’s living environment with things that will satisfy and correspond to common tastes? In this case, the person does not claim to be an art group, and there is the idea of crushing works perfectly.

On the other hand, when one wants to form a group and have some form of artistic heritage, reason and documentation take precedence. It is best to take the time to think and document yourself well, to discover artists, gallery owners and profiles and to get a general idea. If we are in the cause of buying and collecting, it is necessary to know the artist, to pay attention to his biography, the ideas he advocates, to have the so-called cartography, the history of the artist and previously sold works that are often available on the sites of auction houses. It seems that obtaining information is necessary before I decide to buy, so as not to spoil the first purchase at a price that does not correspond to the true value of the artist.

What are the most important mistakes that should not be made?
There are so many mistakes we shouldn’t make! First of all, buy is time! So we should take the time to figure out who we want to buy first. You must have some form of list and goals when you want to create a group. Purchasing priorities and budgets must be defined. So do not rush. Lack of information is also a mistake that is not made. And easy access to savor things, because we don’t have enough insight into all art forms or artistic expressions, and make a decision we might regret. So it is better to buy little but buy well.

Would you recommend going to young artists first?
For me, the idea of a young, mature, or famous artist is not found much in my way of reading artistic adjectives. I think that in a collection, and always an accumulating taste over time, you have to combine different artistic expressions, whether it’s classic paintings that are somewhat abstract or figurative paintings that tell us certain things of a certain time and openness to new artistic expressions that tell us something else about our time today. .

I am fond of collections that are not hermetic to art forms, and I love it when people combine brilliance and quality in all generations.

Is it advisable to attend auctions to make a good acquisition?
Auctions are a very interesting tool to find out the technical offer at a particular time and also to get the status of the order. At the auction, we are supposed to find works that are a little less rare than what we find in a gallery, for example. So the auction for me is a stage, it is a guarantee of quality.

It’s already a slightly more advanced compilation stage, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t start from there. This means that we have a level of requirement when we participate in auctions. When this is not the case, it is important to first visit exhibitions and meet professionals so that they can tell us about the business before making a purchase decision.

Maybe getting started with lithography is a good place to start?
This is not necessarily a good idea, as lithography is an art form in itself and can interfere at any point in the life of a group. But for lithography it is also necessary to protect oneself, to know the quality of the paper, to know whether the work has been bitten by moisture or fungi.

Lithography is a rather special field, some are more valuable than others, and the quality is better. So it is necessary to choose carefully when it comes to lithography and of course the price is more attractive because it is smaller. However, you should not make the mistake of buying because the etched lithographs, which have gaps, where the signature is illegible, are of little value.

Buying art is also keeping it, what should you look at before buying a canvas?
What you have to look at first is the quality of the canvas, and the composition, to see if there are any holes. Check if it is the original canvas, that is, it is not attached to the back of the work. It is necessary to know if the work in question has not undergone restoration and therefore it is difficult for the average person to detect it.

In this case, feel free to ask the professionals who sell the work, and assume this responsibility, to provide us with information on any restorations. This is called the save state. Once the acquisition has been made, areas where the work will be overexposed or experience very large temperature differences should be avoided. Typically, artwork placed next to the air conditioner will cause you to constantly manipulate the tension of the fabric and may create problems.

Ancient, modern or contemporary art?
This is where the heart takes precedence over the mind. It is therefore necessary to have a tropical style of the technique of painting, drawing or painting from the verbs, from the artist’s thoughts, his political aspect and how the artist lives within society. How did he want to change the world in his own way? It is important to be in tune with the artist’s ideas and ideals.

How do you choose the artist?
As a hobbyist and art collector, the proximity and connections I can have with the artists I want to know. This human connection is very basic and important. Try, other than buying the artwork, to get to know the artist. They are often great people who see the world differently and enrich us with their vision. So we understand work when we spend time with people sometimes.

Should you invest in NFTs? If yes, how do you do it?
NFTs are a new artistic continent, it’s like discovering a continent. There is already a lot to drink and eat, with NFTs that are just a survey of things already seen, already known. So you have to be very careful. Even in NFT, you must be in tune with creativity or tempt ideas in the visual artwork. The NFT is just a support, the main difference is obviously the relative importance, because the work is not there before our eyes, but on the screens, it is otherwise. You still have to take the step now and have screens in the house and see things that are also accessible on the internet that you are the sole owner of. It is the philosophy of artwork that responds to the behaviors of today thanks to social networks, financial technology … we must pay attention to it because despite everything the future tends to give more space to NFT.
