How about buying press caricatures as NFTs to “support free speech”?

This, by project stakeholder acceptance, counts as “first”. Even a “great first”, which in the coming days, weeks and months should lead to the press selling cartoons in a new form: the form of NFTs (Non-replaceable code or “non-replaceable symbol” in French). Click on the cartoon not in physics, on the board as usual, but by means of a documented digital file.

On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day this Tuesday 3 May, the International Center for Caricatures, Journalistic Caricatures and Humor of Saint-Just-le-Martel, Gravonage (“NFT’s first global platform for caricatures, humor and caricatures for the press”) and thus, the French Caricature Association (Association of Cartoonists) will present Francophone caricatures) cartoons in the form of these famous caricatures. The “militant” process of “defending the cartoonists of the press and cartoonists”, summed up by the project leaders as follows: “Informal teams in the service of freedom of expression. »

Why this sale?

From this Tuesday, May 3, NFT cartoons will be presented with “the challenge of opening up cartoons to the press to the general public,” explains Jancri, cartoonist, co-founder of Grafonage, treasurer of France-Cartoons and “obviously very close From Saint – only for so long » (smiling).

“The idea is for people to create their own media,” he continues. NFT as we see it does not lock in the safe. On the contrary, I say: “I am claiming and presenting the subject covered in the painting.” […] Because from the moment we buy it, we sanctify it blockchain. So we say to ourselves ‘Not only do I buy it, it’s mine, I support the designer’ but also ‘I put this graphic in blockchain And we can’t take it.” There is a rather hard-line approach. »

But this process also represents new resources to support the profession.

“We’ve all thought about what we can do to help cartoonists and, above all, help cartoonists, Philip Henri, one of the co-chairs of the Center Saint-Just-le-Martel, makes no secret of it. And we found this way. It’s a new form of marketing that can compensate and help designers.” It’s also an opportunity to highlight a profession, that works because it’s business. It’s a way to help them, to make drawings, to show them, to protect them, etc.”

How will it be sold?

The press caricature will be sold for the first time by Grafonage this Tuesday to mark World Press Freedom Day. Sales of NFT graphics will be distributed over time via the Kalart platform, where everyone can buy their work in euros, at an “accessible” starting price: 100 euros. “And then, when the NFTs are bought and resold, it’s the back-to-back acquisitions that will make the NFT valuable, with the artist rewarding,” Jancry explains.

This Tuesday, May 3, a selection of “hundreds of paintings” is scheduled to be sold, “but we will work in series,” Jankri continues. With works by designers from all over the world: Mexico, Ukraine, Russia, Switzerland, Syria, Burkina Faso…and “of course a lot of French designers,” he adds.

“What we are doing is not there,” he recalls. You will succeed, right? We have no idea, but we’re betting people will take on the project. »

And so we identify, on the Internet, the first forms of what could shape the future of “free” cartooning for the press…

A small dictionary is necessary to try to understand the phenomenon…
Since it’s not always easy to find your way around the world of NFT and thus “crypto”, blockchain, crypto art, etc (don’t worry, we miss you on purpose) there is a lot of English, here is a little glossary that can come in handy.. .

NFT. What does the term NFT mean? Answer : ” Non-replaceable code ‘, or in French, ‘non-replaceable symbol’. It is, quite simply, a single (“non-replaceable”) digital object/file with a Certificate of Authenticity (because it is registered in blockchain).

Blockchain. These popular NFTs are based on blockchain (Blockchain, in French). A technology for “storage and transmission of information” that “makes it possible to trace a set of transactions in a decentralized, secure and transparent manner, in the form of a chain of blocks”, summarizes the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Recovery. So this is blockchain This makes it possible to “authenticate” NFTs and follow through on transactions related to them.

digital currencies. Cryptocurrencies became popularized by Bitcoin, certainly the most token of them, which are non-physical currencies that can be used for online purchases (but also sometimes in everyday life) and which, as their name suggests, are “encrypted” and therefore secure. Cryptocurrencies (5,023 in number in 2021) are also based on the blockchain It is often (but not necessarily) used to buy popular NFTs.

The art of coding. Portmanteau, cryptography refers to all the artwork collected around the phenomenon of NFTs (hence blockchain and/or cryptocurrency). Some of his digital artwork could fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars, to put it mildly.
